Beauty of Wood

Wood has always been the beautiful choice for fine home furniture. The natural features of woods are unique and each piece is one-of-a-kind. Characteristics of color, texture, and grain of finished wood products will vary from any given sample and will vary within the finished product itself. These variations will always be more obvious in products with natural finish. Please consult your Schaad & Sons Inc. dealer for more information regarding the characteristics of the wood species offered by Schaad & Sons Inc. Cabinetry.

Environment

All finished wood cabinetry is affected by the temperature and, most importantly, the humidity of the environment within which it is installed or stored for periods exceeding 14 days. To avoid dimensional changes in or damage to components of finished wood cabinetry, it must be maintained in an environment between 30% and 50% relative humidity and a temperature range of 40 to 100 degrees. If cabinetry is to be stored prior to installation, the storage facility must be humidity and temperature controlled within these parameters to maintain warranty protection. Schaad & Sons Inc. Cabinetry does not warrant any finished product stored in a noncomplying environment for more than 7 days. Lack of documentation of proper storage environment or the lack of humidity control at the site of permanent installations may void the Schaad & Sons warranty.

Some examples of environments that may be prone to out of range humidity levels are:

• Hot water, steam or electric baseboard heated homes

• Homes without central air conditioning

• Seashore locations

• Desert locations

• Island locations

• Homes lacking powered central humidification

• Storage on recently poured concrete floor

• Long term storage directly on concrete floor

Schaad & Sons Inc. Cabinetry Customer Service can advise you on available products that will better tolerate out of range temperature and humidity. We recommend frameless cabinetry and components fabricated from medium density fiberboard in these situations.

Finishes - What to expect

All Schaad & Sons Inc. finishes are hand applied to insure quality and maximize the beauty of our select hardwoods

Natural Finishes

These finishes are meant to magnify, not mask or change, the natural characteristics of the wood. The grain and color variations of wood will be pronounced with a natural finish.

Stain Finishes

Schaad & Sons Inc. stains are designed to complement, not hide, the  natural beauty of wood grains. They add color and highlights to blend, not mute the character of your chosen wood.

Paint Finishes

Schaad & Sons Inc. paint finishes are designed for maximum consistency of color and long term durability. Because durability requires hardness, stress lines resulting from humidity variations and handling can appear in painted cabinetry at the corners of doors and at frame junctions. These lines will be magnified by painted finishes but do not affect the durability of the product and are not cause for warranty replacement or repair. Frameless cabinetry and components fabricated from medium density fiberboard will greatly reduce the appearance of stress lines.

Glazed Finishes on Paint or Stains

Glaze is applied to add an additional visual "layer" to the finish. It changes the overall color and will "hang up" in available details of the doors and drawer fronts. The amount and pattern of glaze "hang up" will vary greatly depending on your selection of door style. Glaze density and appearance will vary from the sample blocks to the actual product. A project specific door sample is always advisable especially with paint and glaze combinations.

Physical Finish Treatments

Schaad&Sons Inc. offers a full range of physical finish treatments such as distressing, edging, weathering and wearing. All of these handcraft processes  are designed to impart a worn or antiqued appearance to the cabinetry. The visual effect of these treatments can vary greatly within a project just like natural wear and tear will vary.

How Finishes Age

The colors of all products change over time, whether it be clothing, the finish on your car, or your kitchen cabinets. Different colors and different woods react in their own way with exposure to light and air. Whites tend to amber; clears tend to cloud; cherry becomes darker and more red. Greens to go gray, reds lose their brilliance and blues fade. To minimize these reactions, we use the finest quality coatings and woods available to manufacture our cabinetry.

Changes Over Time

Despite all our care and your good maintenance, your cabinetry will be a different color five years from now, relative to the day it was made. Exposure to direct sunlight can darken the color of natural wood products and fade painted wood surfaces. We recommend shielding your cabinetry by installing blinds or draperies.

If replacement parts or add-ons are required for projects more than twelve months old, samples from the original job should be sent so that we may best blend the new parts with the old. It will never be possible to perfectly match new cherry with old cherry.

Normal Wear and Tear

Schaad &Sons Inc. Limited Warranty does not cover normal wear and tear such as finish wear around knobs and other cabinet hardware. Regular cleaning of Schaad & Sons Inc. cabinetry as outlined in the Care and Cleaning documentation will help to minimize this finish wear.
